Last November 8, 2014, our JHS Chess Varsity under the training of Coach Jonas Tabion, competed against 12 teams with a total of 103 players, in the tournament organised by the Chinese Filipino Business Club and the Eugene Torre Foundation Chess Tournament held at Sky 1 Tower Dasmarinas St., Binondo,Manila. Some of the formidable opponents were Chang Kai Shek College, Philippine Institute of Quezon City, St. Stephen High School, Hope Christian High School, and Tiong Se Academy.
Our team bagged individual awards. Phil Eldrige Sim of 10-Martin Luther got 1st runner up while Ezekiel O. Young of 10-Solomon was hailed Champion. They also brought home the competitions’ major team awards. Team B composed of Fletcher Pua of 9-Nobility, Bianca Tiu of 10-Loyalty, Celine Co of 10-Solomon, Shenelle Lim and Engelberg See of 10-Martin Luther got 1st runner up while Team A composed of Jared Yap of 7 Rizal, Matthew Alekko Tan of 10-Service, Timothy Sitosta of 10-Solomon, Phil Sim of 10-Martin Luther and Ezekiel Young of 10-Solomon were hailed overall champions!

One of the best games in the tournament was Shenelle Lim’s game, where she managed to checkmate her opponent with only four seconds left on her clock, just in the nick of time.

Ezekiel Young, the individual champion, recounted, “Tremendous preparation on tactics, openings and end game was required, not only during training hours but also during free times. Commitment was demanded, but it all paid off for the glory of God.”
